What Is B-Roll? (And Why Your Brand Needs It)

In short
B-roll is the footage that makes your brand film feel alive. Here is what it actually is, why it matters for your marketing, and how to plan for it before your next shoot.
The short answer
B-roll is the supporting footage in a video — everything that is not the main shot of someone talking or the primary action. If your CEO is speaking to camera (that is the A-roll), the cutaways to your team at work, your product in hands, your office, and your city are the B-roll.
The term comes from early film editing, where editors kept a second reel of film — the "B" reel — to cover cuts and add context. The name stuck, and today it is one of the most important parts of any brand video.
Why it matters for your brand
A video that is only a person talking to camera feels flat within seconds. B-roll is what keeps viewers watching:
- It shows instead of tells. Saying "we care about quality" is weak. Showing close-ups of your product being made is proof.
- It hides edits. Cutaways let editors tighten interviews without visible jump cuts, so your message lands cleanly.
- It sets the mood. Slow, warm B-roll feels premium. Fast, punchy B-roll feels energetic. The footage carries your brand tone before a single word is heard.
- It multiplies your content. A good B-roll library from one shoot can feed adverts, social clips, website banners, and presentations for months.

What good B-roll looks like
When we plan a shoot, we capture B-roll in deliberate categories:
- People — your team working, interacting, laughing. Real moments, not stiff poses.
- Product — hands using it, details in close-up, it in the wild.
- Place — your space, your city, the environment your brand lives in.
- Process — how the thing gets made. Process footage builds trust faster than any claim.

Planning tip for your next video
The most common mistake we see is treating B-roll as an afterthought — "we will grab some shots on the day." Instead, brief your studio with a shot list before the shoot. Decide which moments must be captured, and budget time for them. An extra hour of planned B-roll is worth more than a extra day of editing.
